Health and Safety Training FAQS

Health and Safety Training Requirements for the Child Care Development Fund

Maine Roads to Quality houses the Health and Safety Orientation and Renewal,in collaboration with the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Child and Family Services. This on-demand training is required for all licensed providers, regardless of whether they participate in the Child Care Affordability Program (CCAP). License-exempt providers need to take this training if they offer the CCAP.

Health and Safety Orientation (6 hours) – This federally required training covers 12 topics that relate to child health and safety. Providers take this training one time when they begin working in Child Care or Out-of-School-Time programs or family-based settings.

Annual Renewal of CCDF Health and Safety (3 hours) – All providers are required to take the yearly refresher course to maintain federal requirements. A certificate of completion will be provided at the completion of the training.

Both of these trainings meet licensing requirements around health and safety. *Please note that this training gives basic information regarding the required Pediatric CPR and Pediatric First Aid certification. The “Health and Safety Orientation” training does NOT fulfill this requirement. You will also need to have a current Pediatric CPR and Pediatric First Aid card. If you have questions about the Health and Safety trainings, please email mrtq.training@maine.edu or call 1-888-900-0055 (select ‘Option 2’).

In addition to the option of child care practitioners completing the Health and Safety Orientation on-demand training individually, child care owners/directors may choose to have their staff complete the training together as a staff professional development day, or in a series of shorter staff meetings. In order to complete the training as a full staff training, please contact Eric Norgaard at (207) 780-4367 or email eric.norgaard@maine.edu for instructions for completion.
